Day One : Top seeds get Roland Garros off to flyers but Maria Sakkari not so lucky

The 2023 edition of the French Open gets underway in Stade Roland Garros on Sunday as Men's Tennis stars look to make a name for themselves in the absence of the king of clay, Rafael Nadal.



This year's edition is the first to feature neither of Roger Federer nor Rafael Nadal since 1998 as the former had retired while the latter withdraw from the tournament due to a hip injury.

But it still has the likes of Novak Djokovic, the Serb who will be looking to win his 23rd Grand Slam title while Spanish sensation, Carlos Alvarez, who is youngest player ever to topple the ATP ranking in the open era is also in Paris.

In the Women's Singles, a host of top players are available to compete including world number one, Iga Swiatek and Australia Open winner, Aryna Sabalenka.

Aryna Sabalenka makes easy work of Marta Kostyuk to reach round two in Roland Garros!

The second seed beat her Ukrainian opponent in straight sets in a duration of 1h11m on Philippe-Chatrier court.

Sabalenka, who reached the semi finals in 2019 took the first set 6-3, 6-2.


Magdalena Frech thrashes Qinwen Zheng in the round one!

Unseeded Pole, Frech defeats China's Zheng 6-1, 6-1 in just 47 minutes to seal passage into round two in Roland Garros.


Porodoska matches into second round!

Argentine Nadia Porodoska is into second round in Paris after seeing off her opponent, Jessika Ponchet in straight sets.

2020 semi finalist, Porodoska took it 6-0, 6-2 in 1h1m.


Storm Sanders battles back to win!

Australian player, Storm Sanr ders come from a set down to beat Spain's Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in 2h8m on court 8.

Iryna Shymanovic reaches second round!

Panna Udvardy has been eliminated from the Roland Garros after surrendering a first set lead to falling into the hands of Shymanovic.

Udvardy won the first set via a tie breaker but her Belarusian opponent battle back to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in 2h16m.


Leylah Fernandez overcomes Linette!

Leylah Fernandez seals second round berth with a win over Magda Linette in three sets.

Leylah won the first, surrendered the second to 21 seed Linette before claiming the decide in 2h12m.

6-3, 1-6, 6-3 it finished in Simonne Mathieu court.


Muchova upsets Sakkari

Karolina Muchova has staged one of the biggest upset in 2023 Roland as she eliminates top seed Maria Sakkari.

Czech player, Muchova won in straight sets via two tie breakers, taking it 7-6, 7-5 2h7m


Camila Giorgi ousted Alize Cornet in straight sets to move past the first round.

The Italian took it 6-3, 6-4 to kickoff her quest to better last year's fourth round elimination in Paris.


27year old Egyptian star, Mayar Sherif continues her great clay season as overcomes Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-1 to reach second round in Roland Garros.


Irina-Camelia Begu storms to straight sets win over Anna Bondar to reach the second round. 

27 seeded Begu took it 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 39 minutes in court 12.


ATP results 

Ofner off to second round!

Sebastian Ofner is into the second round in Roland Garros after a 6-4, 7-6, 6-2 straight set win over American Maxime Cressy on court 8.

It took 2h20m as the Australian becomes the first ATP star to reach the next round.


Albot advances the second round!

Moldovan player, Radu Albot seals progress into the next round in Roland Garros after beating Patrick Kypson of the US in four sets.

Albot took the first two sets before surrendering the third. He then claimed the fourth to win 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 exactly three hours 

Portuguese player, Nuno Borges shows John Isner the way home in an epic 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 win to get a first ever career main draw win in Roland Garros      

The game lasted for only two minutes shy of four hours in Court 13.


Martinez bottles it — Tallon Greikspoor is into second round in Roland Garros after battling his way back to a five set win over Pedro Martinez.

Greikspoor took the first set before Martinez won the following two while the fourth reached a tiebreaker.

Dutch player, Greikspoor won the tie breaker and the decisive set to complete a 6-4, 2-6, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in 3h37m in court 12.



Thanasi as expected — Wildcard, Thanasi Kokkinakis defeats Dan Evans of Great Britain in straight sets to seal second round spot after 2h28m in court 7.

The Australian won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.


Jason Kubler overcomes his opponent, Facundo Diaz Acosta in five sets to reach the second round in Roland Garros 

6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in three hours and 25 minutes on court 8 it finished in favour of the Australian.

Andrey Rublev dropped one set on his way to defeating Laslo Djere 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round in Roland Garros 

The Russian sees off his opponent in two hours and 32 minutes to get his French Open campaign off to a winning start.
