Phil Foden admits to learning from Bukayo Saka as he praises the Arsenal star’s mental strength
Manchester City’s Phil Foden has showered praises on England teammate, Bukayo Saka following the latter's response of the winger to missing a crucial penalty in the final of the European Championship in 2021.
Speaking ahead of Three Lions’s meeting with Italy in tonight's European Championship qualifier, Foden admits to learning from Saka, who appeared to have put the heartbreak behind him.
Since that penalty miss, Saka has gone from strength to strength as has even now assume the role of penalty taker at his club, Arsenal, scoring all his efforts from 12 yards including against the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Liverpool.
“Definitely, I learn from him,” said Foden. “From him missing that penalty, he's turned it around with his performances on the pitch for club and country. He's such a nice lad and everyone loves him. He's a big part of what we do here.”
Saka has also grown to be a major part of the England set-up under Gareth Southgate and is almost an assured starter on the right of attack.
“It shows what a person he is. He's such a young lad, he's still developing and still learning about the game. For him to come back from something like that just shows the courage he's got and how much he's come on. I'm so happy for him.” Foden added.
Saka has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season and will be expected to start for England in the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Napoli later on Thursday.
Both Foden and Saka will face-off in a decisive Premier League game next month when Manchester City host Arsenal at the Ethiad.
