Suits the project but not the taste of the fans : Here's why Chelsea wants Mauricio Pochettino

Image
Not many saw this coming but Mauricio Pochettino is now the leading candidate for the Chelsea job after talks collapsed with former Bayern boss, Julian Nagelsmann. The German had been frontrunner for the vacant managerial role at the West London club, moreso after Chelsea allowed former assistant Manager, Anthony Barry to join the Bavarians on the request of Thomas Tuchel. The meeting held between Todd Boehly and the representatives of Bayern reportedly borne good fruits and the good relationship established was supposed to aid the appointment of Nagelsmann, whom the club considered its priority. However, it appeared there was a matter both Nagelsmann and Chelsea could not find a neutral ground, and the German decided not to take up the role, leaving Chelsea to continue their search. Former Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino is now the main target for the role and talks is currently ongoing between Chelsea and the Argentine. Why Pochettino ? Chelsea have not really taken his

St. Totteringham's day returns in a gutsy finale but to what end, Arsenal ?

Image
Despite the spirited end to affairs under the lights in the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's failure to pick up maximum points is always going to be the headline, and what a way to undo what has been a sensational ride for most part of the campaign. Three winless games, that is no champion stuff. In the two previous games before tonight, it was them blowing a two goal lead but last night, they had to chase it for arguably all game. The point earn mean they'll finish about their North London neighbour, Tottenham Hotspur in the league this season, bringing back the Saint Totteringham's day celebration for the first time since the 2015/16 season. However, it is an achievement that was not excitingly welcome by Arsenal fans world wide due to the inability of their team to win on the night, thereby literally surrending the league title to defending Champion, Manchester City. A win would have also seen them secure Champions League spot on the night but even as that is inevitable, the

Bayern and Upamencano blunders denied what could have been as Pep Guardiola's City eases into the semis

Bayern Munich versus Manchester City for a place in the Champions League semi finals was a very much anticipated contest as it promised to be the most fiercely contested doubleheader of the round. It was supposed to be a clash between Bayern, a team that had won all of their games in the competition this season, keeping seven clean sheets out of eight games and conceding only two goals. The Bavarians kept clean sheets in the doubleheaders against Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSG Paris Saint-Germain, conceded the least goals while also being one of the most scoring teams in the competition. And a Manchester City side, fresh from humiliating a German team in RB Leipzig in a 7-0 score line, thereby equaling their biggest ever win in the competition's history. However, the feeling started to sway immediately Bayern parted ways with now former manger, Julian Nagelsmann due to poor form domestically amongst other internal issues. Prior to his first Champions League game as Bayern manager i

Zlatan Ibrahimovic : Milan's win not a win for the unluckiest player in the Champions League history

Image
Playing for six different Champions League winners and not winning it could be less disheartening than what Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to experience if Milan wins the competition this season. AC Milan are into the last four of the Champions League following a 1-1 draw with fellow Italian, Napoli on Tuesday night in the Maradona Stadium, completing a 2-1 aggregate win for the Rossonerri. Milan, who last reached the semi finals of the competition in 2007 won the first leg in San Siro thanks to an Ismael Bennacer’s only goal and needed to avoid a defeat to book a ticket to the semis this time. After a start which saw Olivier Giroud's penalty saved by Alex Meret, the Frenchman eventually make up for the miss, scoring to put Stefano Pioli’s side in front few minutes before the interval. At that point, Napoli needed two goals to force extra time and inside the final ten minutes, they were awarded a penalty as the ball strike the hand of Fikayo Tomori. Unfortunately for Napoli, who were pl

From Hero to Villain - Frank Lampard put Legendary status at risk with absurd return to Chelsea

Frank Lampard's return to Chelsea as the interim manager was always going to be a disaster. The Englishman is getting it now but the consequences will not only affect his resume, but also his relationship with the fans, who considers him a club legend. One would have thought, what was he thinking returning to Chelsea in this state ? Wanting to be a hero, the former West Ham United man is heading to a zero because fans are growing less in love for him as the inevitable continues to befall their club. Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack, to mention but a few will forever have the respect Chelsea faithfuls have for them preserved because they've served the club at their strength, and not with their flaws. There's a reason Cesar Azpilicueta is no longer a regular in the club's starting XI. Once you can not consistently deliver and no longer in your prime, it is wiser to carefully select the battles to fight. For managers, it is not the same because the responsibility of the t

A good problem to have but misfiring Arsenal perhaps have made it City's title to lose

Image
This is what Liverpool have endured in the five previous seasons that left them with just one Premier League title despite being so good and recording over 90 points in more than three seasons or so in that time. Mikel Arteta had been on the other side of things as the assistant to Pep Guardiola in Manchester City, but the Spaniard could be about to find himself in a similar situation to that of Jürgen Klopp. Well, it's a good problem to have but it is never a good feeling falling the victim in such circumstance. In the wake of the draw at West Ham United , Arsenal will need a miracle to deliver a first league title in more than 19years. Last season was awful. The start was the worst in the history of the club and the ending to it delivered some of the most heartbreaking moments in the club's history. But fans, a fair part held on to the positives, which to be fair was all they could given how poor they've been in past seasons. On the verge of Champions League qualification

Marcel Sabitzer lights up Old Trafford but Man United's complacency made Sevilla invincible yet again

Image
It looked Manchester United were on their way to a first ever win over Sevilla after three previous failed attempts following a two goal cushion established earlier on at Old Trafford. Marcel Sabitzer scored two goals inside the opening 21 minutes to give Erik Ten Hag's side the sense of victory, which was to be a platform on adding another Spanish team to the list of their conquest in Europa League this season. Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial were creator of the goals, and the Austrian midfielder, currently on loan from Bayern Munich made no mistake beating the Goalkeeper, each time with his weaker foot. Aside from being drawn with Real Sociedad in the same group, Manchester United have faced a Spanish opposition in each stage of the elimination round in the competition this season. They've beaten Barcelona in the playoff round before battering Sevilla’s city rivals, Real Betis to earn a place in the last eight, where they have been drawn with another one of them but this

Sadio Mané in Bayern Munich : How did it go so wrong when it started so bright

Image
A fallout with his teammate left a good percentage of the squad puzzled of his actions since securing a move to the German giants just last summer. Sadio Mané was well received when he completed his move to Bayern Munich from Liverpool last summer. After the Senegalese decided not to continue with the Reds that never walk alone due to the handling of his contract in recent years. Also wanting to take up a different challenge in the later stages of his career, the Bavarians, one of the best and most reputable club in Europe gave him the opportunity to achieve that. Not only that, he was made the highest earner in the Bundesliga but one thing that might not have been well thought is his compatibility with what the club was going to be missing. The departure of Robert Lewandowski obviously left a big hole to fill in the squad but instead of investing on a direct replacement, the club went a winger in Sadio Mané, when the already have many of the likes. Lewandowski assured Bayern at least

Accessing the philosophies and the likelihood of Chelsea’s managerial candidates succeeding at the club

Chelsea again resume the search for a new head coach following the end of Graham Potter's six disastrous months at the helm. The club paid a record fee to Brighton to secure the services of the Englishman in September but unfortunately, things never go as planned, with Potter not even seeing out a year of the five signed. Potter, had a record of twelve wins, eleven defeats in eight draws in his 31 games in charge, a 38 per cent win rate which saw him left as the worst manager Chelsea has had in recent time. In the wake of his departure, the search for a successor immediately commences, or maybe had commenced before the announcement of his dismissal with several options available for the London Club. However, taking their time, Chelsea have settled for former manager and club legend, Frank Lampard to take charge as the interim manager until the end of the season. Amongst the top coaches available which Chelsea could choose to lead the team going forward, we take a look at four of wh

Chelsea dilemma : Adopting the ways of the previous era left The Boehlys correcting one mistake with another

Image
The new project, under Todd Boehly started at the wrong time but for Chelsea, no time can ever be right to part ways with the era that has brought them unprecedented success. A good part of their 19 years with Roman Abramovic was a match made in heaven and boy did it deliver the turning point in the club's history as good memories and trophies decorate the tenure. Aside his urge to take the club to that top level, things also seemed to always go the way of Chelsea in the era of the Russian billionaire in a way that the club always come clutch when already written off. A good example was the run to their two Champions League titles. Those came at the time the club was struggling. But adding more sauce to the era, they were also able to attract top class managers, players and sponsorship deals. Change of management when results are not favourable was most times a positive turning point for Chelsea, but logically, it should be otherwise. Even though new managers on the long run get it

Chelsea managerial candidate, Abel Ferreira tells Erik Ten Hag to shut up

Image
Palmeiras manager, Abel Ferreira has responds to Erik Ten Hag's endless complains of the club's congested fixtures, by telling the Dutchman to shut up. The Manchester United boss did not hide his displeasure after Marcus Rashford limped off the field in a 2-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford in the early Premier League kickoff on Saturday. Rashford hobbled off less than ten minutes from time, minutes after assisting Anthony Martial for the second goal of the game, and Ten Hag has blamed the occurrence on the hectic fixtures, challenging the Premier League to make amendments. It was United's third game already in April with six more to come despite the postponement of their league meeting with Chelsea due to the FA Cup trip to Brighton. Commenting on Ten Hag's reaction, 44year old Abel Ferreira, who is being linked with the vacant managerial position at Chelsea said to the media;  “The Manchester United coach complains because Rashford got hurt and that is a consequence
