Duke and Lewandowski for Aussies and Poles respectively leave qualification spot in Group C and D undecided
Robert Lewandowski, Piotr Zielinski and Mitchell Duke, all first time Goalscorer in the FIFA World Cup finals decide the first two games of the day, keeping alive the hopes of their nations reaching the next round.
Following defeat to defending Champions, France in their opening game, Australia bounced back with a 1-0 win over Tunisia to put themselves in a promising position ahead of their final group game against Denmark.
The Socceroos made a good start and are ahead as early as the 23rd minute after Mitchell Duke glanced his header past Tunisia Goalkeeper, Aymen Dahmen following a deflected cross from Craig Godwin.
That ended up as the only goal of the game as all of Tunisia’s effort to score an equalizer proved abortive as Graham Arnold's side held on for maximum points, which move them up to second before Denmark and France face off later in the day.
Group D
Robert Lewandowski set up one and score the other to give Poland a 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the first game of the group D, meaning Argentina have to at least earn a draw against Mexico to stand any chance of qualification.
Heading into the game on the back of an impressive comeback win over favorite, Argentina, Saudi Arabia were clearly the better side for most part of the game but their bubbles were bursted when Robert Lewandowski’s clever play in the box led to him setting up Zielinski for the opener in the 39th minute.
Salem Al Dawsari was denied from the spot just before half time by Goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, who also spectacularly kept out the follow up from Mohammed Al Burayk.
Robert Lewandowski sealed the win eight minutes from time, pouncing on a defensive mistake by Al Malki to score his first ever FIFA World Cup goal.
Four points now for the Poles, who now needs only a draw against Argentina to progress into the next round, and could even progress with a loss, if result elsewhere goes their way.
