Chelsea : Boehly - Tuchel ineptitude will be punished but no doubt about the signings coming in before the end of the transfer window
In the end, the signings will come in for Chelsea this summer despite the setbacks they've had albeit most of the signings still to come this will see them overpay because time is running out and they will become short of options.
Yes. Chelsea have already paid part of the price for the incapability of the duo of Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel as they've seen some of their primary targets moved elsewhere but more is still to come before the end of the summer.
Maybe there will be no Barcelona to beat them to another signing. Maybe the players this time round will more opened to joining Chelsea but some of the factors that will still haunt them is time, and teams will continue to overvalue their players as they've learnt of Chelsea's desperation.
The club's summer business has been really impacted by the sanction at the start of the summer and the time wasted on player departures and as well at the helm of affairs.
This summer has seen a lot depart the club following the end of Roman Abramovich’s 19 year era. Sporting Director, Marina Granovskaia’s departure really unsettled their summer plans while there have also been other significant departures, including technical and performance advisor, Petr Cech.
The needless delay before the commencement of transfers has in the end have it's toll on the summer business. Yes Chelsea were under sanction and couldn't make transfers but what did they do after the ban was lifted ? They only spent weeks to oversee outgoings.
Time was also wasted with Raphinha. The Brazilian was very clear he only wants a move to Barcelona but Chelsea kept on waiting and hoping the Spanish club would not be able to afford the fee they had agreed with Leeds United.
However, it's still the club's inability to convince players to join that has played the bigger role. Now managing the club’s transfer negotiations, both Thomas Tuchel and Todd Boehly are not expert in this field, though they have already secured two big name signings.
But those are very different deals. Raheem Sterling wants to leave Manchester City to get more regular playtime and only Chelsea were interested in him. Moreso, Manchester City were opened to letting him leave.
Sterling had a year left on his contract at the Ethiad and fetching a fee in the region of £50 million for the English forward is considerably good business for City when they already have players ready to fill in the left void.
As for Kalidou Koulibaly, he desperately needs a move away from Napoli at 31, so it was easy for Napoli to part ways with the defender having a year left on his contract for around €40 million. Very good business.
These facts and more have played their role in Chelsea having it easy with their two summer signings so far.
The uncharacterized moves this summer has sometimes make fans ponder if they [Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel] really do know what they want. Since last summer, Chelsea had been seriously interested in Jules Kounde but were unable to complete a deal.
They knew Rudiger was leaving this summer but didn't make a move beforehand. Even after the sanction was lifted, they instead switched focus to Mattijs De Ligt and that affected their move for the Sevilla man, whom at that time was ready to move to London.
As per the reputable Spanish journalist, Gerard Romero, Kounde learnt Thomas Tuchel prioritizes De Ligt when the interest in him died down and Chelsea intensified negotiation with Juventus before De Ligt choose to move to Bayern Munich.
Knowing he is but an alternative for Chelsea, he changed his stance as well. Delayed his decision when he learnt of Barcelona's interest, because the Spanish club could not at that time table a bid to Sevilla until after the activation of the second economic lever.
Chelsea had sent him details on personal terms for days but he failed to respond as Sevilla continued to wait for Barcelona's bid. But immediately Barcelona sent him terms, he accepts before agreement was reached between the two Spanish club.
The desperation is now starting to grow with only a week away from the start of a new season. Current options that look realistic for Chelsea right now will be ready made players, because their primary targets have all moved elsewhere.
Wesley Fofana is a good player that would really help the Chelsea defence and on long-term. Still only 21, the French defender is renowned for his good defensive qualities, and he is an admitted Chelsea fan.
However, knowing Leicester City’s reputation of selling players for very expensive fees, it will only get worse for Chelsea in that Leicester itself is not in a position to sell, with Fofana still having five years more on his contract.
Leicester City is also aware of Chelsea's desperation so they might be looking to milk the situation. Maybe they will make Fofana the most expensive defender of all time. Funny but this is Leicester City, you can't rule out any possibility.
Josko Gvardiol, Presnel Kimpebe, Milan Skriniar, Pau Torres and a few names in the Premier league are options the club could explore. Reports suggests Chelsea have started negotiation for Presnel Kimpebe of PSG but nothing has progressed after a few weeks.
Aside the defence, the attack also needs strengthening. Romelu Lukaku has departed while speculations of Timo Werner also heading out is begining to generate credibility.
Even if in the end Werner stays, alongside Kai Havertz, they have both proven no real threat in front of goal having not been able to score 15 league goals each after two seasons. Surely Chelsea need upgrade in that aspect.
Raheem Sterling has been signed but Englishman is not enough for the task. More of the likes is to come in if Chelsea want to at least match the level of some of the big names in the topflight.
It remains to be seen which players will make the switch to the Stamford Bridge this summer and it will be more interesting to learn at what amount will be paid to lure them away from their respective clubs.
