Recap of actions in the Premier League gameweek 13 as Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City earned wins while Chelsea’s poor run vs. United continues

Another exciting Premier League gameweek saw the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City secure home wins while Chelsea were held by Manchester United. Leicester City and Brentford return to winning ways and now we take a recap of action that went down in the English top-flight over the weekend.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli fired Arsenal back to winning ways in a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates in the Premier League early kikcoff on Saturday afternoon.

After a first half which saw captain, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang squandered a clear-cut chance to put them in front, Bukayo Saka brought forth his second goal against Newcastle United four minutes before the hour mark and substitute, Gabriel Martinelli scored his first league goal at the Emirates in 22 months as the Gunners run out 2-0 winners.

The win helped them strengthen their grip on fifth place while they move level on points with West Ham United, who have the better goal difference. Newcastle however remain without a league win this season, and remain bottom of the league table.

Liverpool make it back to back league win with a 4-0 thumping of Southampton at the Anfield Stadium on Saturday. The Jurgen Klopp side made a good start to the game and Diogo Jota fired them in front in the second minute, assisted by the returning Andrew Robertson.

The Portuguese made it 2-0 two minutes after the half hour mark as the ball was put on a platter for him by Mohamed Salah and he needed just a touch to tap into the empty net. Thiago Alcantara scored to make it two in two for himself five minutes later as Liverpool look to kill of the game.

Liverpool scored their 39th goal in the Premier League this season when Virgil van Dijk rises to plant a header into the net of his former employer after a corner from Trent Alexander-Arnold to seal a 4-0 win for the host, who temporarily move ahead of Manchester City to second on the log.

The result means back to back defeat for Southampton, coming after they have gone five games unbeaten for games ending in 90 minutes. They move two places down the table and are now placed 16th.

Aston Villa record back to back win in as many games under Steven Gerrard with a 2-1 win over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace.

Left-back Matt Target gave them an early lead, lashing home from an Ashely Young corner and the lead was doubled the lead late in the second half with his third league goal this season, as many as he managed in the whole of last season.

Marc Guehi tapped home a cross from Kouyaté in the fifth minute of added time but the visitors held on for the three points, which move them level on points with their host but with an inferior goal difference, they remain a place below Palace.

Norwich make it three games unbeaten in the Premier League after their goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wonderers. The Canaries had the better chances to win the game but had to settle for a point in the end.

Brighton’s clash with Leeds United at the AMEX ended in a goalless. It is the first time a clash between the two at Brighton will produce no goal since their League Division One meeting in October 1979.

The result temporarily put Brighton above Manchester United on the log while Leeds move three points clear of the relegation zone.

The game between Tottheham Hotspur and Burnley at Turf Moor was postponed due to bad weather.

Leicester return to winning ways in some fashion after bettering their former Boss’ Watford in a six goal thriller.

James Maddison was directly involved in three goals, one goal two assists while Jamie Vardy net a brace. There are goals for Nigeria duo of Emmanuel Dennis and Lookman Ademola as Joshua King was also on target, converting from the spot after Dennis has won a penalty.

Ivan Toney’s first half penalty earned maximum points for Brentford in their first ever league meeting with Everton since 1954.

The result means Brentford have a first win in seven games and now move up to 12th on the log while Rafael Benitez’ Everton are now winless in seven games, dropping to 14th in the standings.

Manchester City moved level on points with Chelsea after a 2-1 win over West Ham United at the Ethiad. City took an early lead in the through Riyad Mahrez but his goal would not stand, as the offside flag was already up to deny him.

Ilkay Gundogan put them in front three minutes after the half hour mark and it was not until the 90th minute that Fernandinho was able to double the advantage.

There was a late consolation for the visitors through substitute Manuel Lanzini in the last minute of added time, capitalizing on an error from Fernandinho before lifting a brilliant effort over Ederson in the City goal.

West Ham remain fourth, edging Arsenal with a better goal difference while City makes it five consecutive wins in all competitions.

The last kickoff on Sunday was the biggest one of the weekend as Manchester United travelled to the Stamford Bridge to take on table toppers Chelsea. The first half did not produce a goal despite Chelsea having great chances to draw the first blood.

Jadon Sancho capitalized on a poor control by Jorginho and run through on goal to score his first Premier League goal for Manchester United and give them the lead five minutes after the break.

Chelsea were back on level terms in the 69th minute, as Jorginho converts from the spot after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had fouled Thiago Silva in the area when trying to clear from a corner.

It finished 1-1 in London and to leave Chelsea without a win against Manchester United in eight games but the point move them one clear of City, while Manchester United ended a run of two game losing streak in the league. The only point earned was able to lift them from 10th to 8th in the league table.
